The White House is working on a proposal for federal privacy rules, The Washington Post reports. The U.S. Department of Commerce has met with companies such as Facebook, Google, AT&T and Comcast, as well as consumer advocacy groups, in hopes of producing general principles for entities to handle consumers’ private information. Lawmakers would use the principles to create the country’s first federal privacy law. “Through the White House National Economic Council, the Trump Administration aims to craft a consumer privacy protection policy that is the appropriate balance between privacy and prosperity,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters said in a statement. Meanwhile, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., has introduced a pair of digital privacy bills.
